Traceroute

This page serves as a guide on how to perform a traceroute.  The instructions are a little different between Windows PC’s and Apple Mac so we’ll provide information on both.  If have any difficulties or queries, then please do not hesitate to contact us at virtuallynao@gmail.com

Windows

Mac

XP

1. Click on the Start Menu (usually located at the bottom left hand corner of the screen), and choose Run.

 

2. In the Run box which appears, type ‘cmd’ and then click < OK >.

Vista / Windows 7

1. Click on the Start button (usually located at the bottom left hand corner of the screen), type ‘cmd’ into the search box and press enter.

Windows Traceroute

1. In the command box which appears, type ‘tracert’, then a space, followed by the Public IP address we ask you to test.  In this example, we’ll perform a traceroute to Google which one of it’s many public IP addresses is 8.8.8.8

 

2. After you press the enter key, your computer will take a few minutes performing the traceroute. When complete, you will see a message reading ‘Trace complete.’ at the bottom of the screen.  If the traceroute overflows the window, you can make the command box larger by dragging the edge of the window.

 

3. We now need to copy this information so that you can paste it into an e-mail to virtuallynao@gmail.com To do this, right click on the black icon, at the top left hand corner of the command box and choose ‘Edit’ and then ‘Select All’.

 

4. Right click on the black icon, at the top left hand corner of the command box and choose ‘Edit’ and then ‘Copy’.

 

5. Please paste these details in an e-mail or send a screen shot to us at virtuallynao@gmail.com Keep checking back as we’ll be posting sections of the route on this site, as and when results arrive.

Mac OS X

1. At the top right hand corner of the screen, click on the magnifying glass icon and then type ‘terminal’ into the search box. Click ‘Terminal’ in the Applications result.

2. In the terminal window which appears, type ‘traceroute’, then a space, followed by the Public IP address we ask you to test.  In this example, we’ll perform a traceroute to Google which one of it’s many public IP addresses is 8.8.8.8

3. After you press the enter key, your computer will take a few minutes performing the traceroute. When complete, you will see the command prompt at the bottom of the screen.  If the traceroute overflows the window, you can make the terminal window larger by dragging the bottom right hand corner of the window.

4. Use the mouse pointer to highlight all the text.  From the File Menu, choose Edit and then Copy.
